Nervous About Using Coupons?

I have had several readers leave comments about being nervous going into stores to use their coupons and scenarios, especially for multiple transactions. Here are a few tips I have found to be helpful.

1.) Study the ads-Know what's on sale and what's being included in the deal. Pay attention to size specifications and limits.

2.) Learn from others-Many people have been posting scenarios here. Don't be afraid to ask question or post your own scenarios for feedback.

3.) Take a quick trip to Walgreens (especially if you're new to Wags)-Know where to look for certain products. Check out how well stocked they are on items you intend to buy the next day. Some Wags may not be done restocking that day but just to get a general idea of how many items you may be able to get. Ask when they get their trucks in.

4.) Create scenarios-Share with others for feedback or questions. Go over them for any errors. Once I thought something was giving 4RR and created many scenarios based on that and when I checked back on the ad, it was only giving 2RR. Don't forget to add in fillers when need be.

5.) Create a Plan B-Items may not be stocked, someone else may have gotten to them before you did, so know what items you can substitute into your transactions.

6.) Be Organized-Get together the coupons that you'll need, separate them into their different transactions (like in envelopes or paperclips). Print out your scenarios and put it in your binder or purse with your coupons.

7.) When checking out-Take a deep breath. Ask the cashier if they'll do multiple transactions. If you don't want to push it, ask if they'll do 2 transactions.

8.) Be prepared for problems and how you'll respond-Whether it's the cashier's attitude, them telling you that you can't do such and such. Stay calm, breathe, and be polite. They're more likely to work with you if you remain nice. But remember, being nice and polite doesn't mean you're a pushover, so stand firm.

9.) Try not to draw attention to yourself-Sometimes it's easier to deal with calling the catalina company then having the manager print you an RR that didn't print out. They'll want to scrutinize your receipt. They may tell you that an RR didn't print because you used coupons. This draws attention to yourself. They'll know who you are and what you do. This can be a good thing or bad thing, depending on the manager's attitude with coupons. Being argumentative also draws attention to yourself. Getting lots of overage also draws attention.

10.) Be kind to the people behind you when checking out.-If there are people behind you, let them go and you can go back to your transactions. Or do one or 2 transactions, take your items to you car and go back in.

11.) Pay attention to your Q's-Make sure your coupons are for the products specified, make sure they're not expired. If a cashier catches this, they'll become skeptical and start inspecting all the coupons. The only downside is that it is time consuming to do that and they may become nitpicky ("the picture doesn't match your item"). And we don't want cashiers to get in trouble. So make sure your coupons are being used correctly.

Coupons~ A Legal Form Of Shoplifting?

I thought it would be interesting to take up the challenge of one of my readers and write a response to the proposal that using coupons and store rewards programs to get as many products for free as possible, could be considered "a legal form of shoplifting".

Shoplifting is commonly defined as theft or the wrongful taking and carrying away of the goods or property of others. Coupons are almost always issued with usage guidelines for both the consumer who will use them and the retailer who will receive them. By definition, as long as these guidelines are adhered to and not exploited, it is impossible for theft to take place.

Coupons are marketing tools and issued as incentives to encourage certain activities. They are part of a carefully planned and calculated marketing strategy and in most case their campaigns are backed by specific insurance policies to prevent the issuer from financial damage as a result of mistakes in their planning or marketing. Coupons can be used to encourage brand loyalty, to increase public awareness of a new product, to encourage or recapture market share for a particular store or as a marketing device for clearing out a discontinued product or packaging style in a quick and cost effective fashion.

The reason why a coupon has been issued is irrelevant for the purposes of this discussion but what is important is the fact that someone has published it for a specific purpose and attached to that purpose is a specific and calculated cost. The marketing purpose may or may not succeed and the calculated costs may fall below the predicted costs but the one certainty is that the discounted value of the goods attached to the coupon will never exceed the total number of coupons released. It doesn’t matter whether I choose to use one ‘50% off Cheetos’ coupon or 200, the issuer suffers no uncalculated financial loss.

Like issuers, providing the usage guidelines for the coupon are adhered to, retailers by definition cannot be stolen from. In fact, the usage of coupons is a fantastic way of encouraging custom and introducing new or underexposed products to the market and therefore encouraging people to walk through their doors. Retailers are directly reimbursed by the coupon issuer for the coupons that they take and in most cases are credited an additional 8 cents per coupon to mitigate against the retailers administrative overheads. If they keep to the rules, they cannot lose. In my experience however retailers are often poorly educated about how to use coupons and the guidelines that they must meet in order for them to be reimbursed. A great example of this would be the blood glucose meters I purchased form Walgreens this weekend.

From what I have read, in order for the retailer to be reimbursed the amount specified by the coupon, the retailer should have recorded the serial number of each product on the coupon at the time of purchase. Without meeting this requirement, it is unlikely the manufacturer will honor the refund. In the case of this weekend, of the 23 monitors that I purchased, only two had their serial numbers recorded.

Do I feel bad that Walgreens has probably just missed out on around $1000? Absolutely not. I am in no way responsible for any training or communication issues that they have. In actual fact, as a responsible couponer, I spend a significant amount of time in cashier’s lines helping them to understand the rules attached to coupons and helping them not to make mistakes by denying my perfectly legal transactions.

In some cases, a retailer makes a conscious decision to deviate from the coupon handling guidelines; a classic example of this being the ‘one coupon per transaction’ or ‘one coupon per visit’ disclaimers. In the event that I have used multiple coupons of this type, I have done so with the full intention of purchasing each item separately and re-queuing at the cashier each time. If the retailer enforces this guideline then that is their prerogative and I am prepared to abide by it. Luckily, and often in the sake of common sense, most of the retailers I use are prepared to exercise common sense and will allow me to carry out multiple transactions at once. Multiple visits to the register means more of their time and resources used and ultimately a reduction in the profit they are making.

So in conclusion, in the cases where coupons are used legally, I find it hard to support the opinion that their use could be considered a legal form of shoplifting. Whether I am using a single coupon or twenty, the fact that my family and I are benefiting from the planning and research I have done means that I have ‘played the game well’. If you opened up your newspaper on a Sunday morning and a hundred dollar bill fell out, would you take them to the bank? Of course you would! Coupons and deals are just like free money – It just takes a little more effort to use them properly!

*I would like to open this discussion up to my readers. Please keep to the topic and remain constructive.*

Wonderful Walgreens Weekend! Over $2000 saved PLUS Walgreens pay me $182 !

Ok...those of you who follow my blog (Thank you for reading!) will have seen my posts about the deals that were due to hit Walgreens this weekend.. See Here....

Well, I am happy to say that the deals worked as predicted and I was able to make the most of them! We started at just before 1AM this morning where we tested some of the Register Rewards deals at our local Walgreens and found they were working.

Over the course of several trips today, we were able to acquire over $2200 worth of products and only spent $61.52 in 'out of pocket' cash. In addition to this, I still have $244 dollars worth of Register Rewards to spend over the next 2 weeks. More than likely, these Register Rewards will be rolled back into additional deals that also produce RRs so watch this space as the totals might change!

I lost track of the number of separate transactions I made but I had a HUGE pile of receipts!

Walgreens has basically just paid me $182.48 for the pleasure of stockpiling these items!

The Blood monitors helped me start off the deal - each one cost $1.39 but then generated a $5 register reward which then got rolled into all the other deals. With over 50 Walgreens within a 10 mile radius of our home this meant there were plenty to go round.

Not only have I been able to score some awesome deals but I look forward donating the meters to several local charitable organizations so more people get to share the benefits with me!

Here's the math!
Total Before Coupons: $2243.82
Total Money Spent: $61.52
Total Saved: $2182.30 Plus $244 of Register Rewards
Total Savings 108.1%

*I wanted to clarify for those with questions about how I had so little out of pocket expense. I also started with almost $45 in Register Rewards from last week. I rolled every RR I could to minimize my oop expense. It took longer and more transactions, but it's possible.*

My Living Will

A friend of mine shared this with me this morning and it was just too cute (and true) not to share. (Not child appropriate.)

Last night, my friend and I were sitting in the living room and I said to her,"I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug." She got up, unplugged the computer, and threw out my wine. She's such a bitch.....

Walgreens Freebies

I made a quick run to Walgreens tonight during American Idol. (I secretly do not like this show-don't tell Russ.) I also went in search of ice cream since we missed out on free cone day at Ben and Jerry's. Anyway, I ended up getting 4 of the Contour diabetes meters. These are currently generating a catalina coupon good for a free tube of Crest Pro Heath toothpaste on each one. In this month's Easysaver catalog, there is a $5 rebate when you buy 4 Crest items. So, I ended up with 4 free meters, 4 free tubes of toothpaste, and I submitted for the $5 rebate on my gift card, so it will actually be $5.50 with my 10% bonus. SCORE!

Total Before Coupons: $77.92
Total Money Spent: $0
Total Saved: $77.92 (100%)

*Plus I made $5.50 on my Walgreens gift card from the Easysaver rebate!*

Freecycle.org

I have to share with you about the beauty of Freecycle.org. I have been a member of my local group now for several years. The Freecycle Network is made up of 4,728 groups with 6,632,000 members across the globe. It's an entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer. Membership is free. To sign up, find your community here.

A couple of cool personal stories to share about Freecycle. Russ and I actually got married by someone on Freecycle. We advertised looking for someone inexpensive to perform our ceremony, and we found someone! A lovely lady was most gracious to do it for us on a sunny afternoon in January. Happy times, and it didn't cost us a thing. :)

Recently, Russ spotted a trampoline advertised on Freecycle and responded asking if we might pick it up for the kids. Because of the size of our local group things tend to go faster than some other areas might. We were told that there were a couple of people that responded ahead of us, but if no one showed up, we would be next in line. Well, guess what? She called us the next day! The kids now have a HUGE trampoline in our backyard that would have easily cost us $350 at Walmart. Russ finished putting it together this evening and they had a blast trying it out!

Flashbacks! Whatever happened to...

Earlier on today I unpacked the last of our moving boxes and started the painful process of rearranging my stockpile. It was interesting to see how some of my more extreme deals from previous months were still paying off and how they really have allowed us as a family to make some significant savings on our weekly budget.

Remember these?

Back in September, I grabbed around 100 boxes of Poptarts from Target. One of the posts can be found HERE . At the time we were laughing about how many items we had stashed but seven months later they have been very popular as grab and go breakfasts for the kids, part of food parcels for the homeless and we STILL have around twenty boxes left!

Also back in September, we were almost literally drowning in Vitamin Water and Powerade with hundreds of bottles in the stockpile. Well we drank a lot as they were great for packed lunches and a healthier alternative to soda but they were also a huge success at the yard sale we held just before we moved. One lady bought nearly 250 bottles but had to make two trips to collect them as her car was riding so low on the suspension!.

We probably still have maybe a hundred assorted bottles in the stockpile.

Other popular items in the 'pre move' yard sale were the Sunsilk shampoos and Lysol sprays . Selling selective items from the stockpile felt wrong but was an unfortunate necessity - they were just too heavy to move house with! On a more positive side, the yard sale raised over $500 in just several hours!

Remember the Toilet Paper mountain?
At the time this was a running joke in our family - we had hundreds of packs that we paid just a few pennies for. Seven months later we still have around two thirds of the stockpile intact and we have not had to buy a back of TP since!

Finally, a couple of deals that were done just prior to the creation of this blog - in a lot of ways, the success of these deals were actually the inspiration for recording my purchases. After taking advantage of a super Walgreens deal that paid me Register rewards to buy diapers in August last year, despite having three children in diapers, I have not had to buy a single pack since and still have around 20 packs in the stockpile.

On a final note, Jack is one year old in a couple of weeks and is now making the transition from Soy formula to 'Moo Cow milk!' In he past twelve months, I have not had to buy a single can of formula with 'real money' - all his milk has been purchased using deals or traded formula checks!

So in conclusion and in answer to all the people who look at me like I am crazy when I walk out of Target with two hundred bags of goldfish or a half ton of granola bars....stockpiling is not about greed or gluttony, it is about grabbing the deals while you can and using the money that you will save over the following months to buy the things that you wouldn't otherwise be able to afford!

Target: Airhead Extremes

I ordered 20 of these coupons off eBay because Russ loves these things! Target was supposed to have them on sale for around .59 making them about .04 each. Imagine my surprise when I found them on clearance for .44 each! I was able to score 11 of these on this particular run. With the overage I got the kids a treat each.

Walgreens: Sunsilk Deal

I told you (late, I know) about the moneymaking Sunsilk deal at Walgreens last night. I was able to get in on this deal at the last minute last night. Whew! Here's how it played out:

Total Before Coupons: $239.60
Total Money Spent: $11.40
Total Saved: $288.20 (120.3%) (includes $60 rebate)

*Plus, since these products qualified for the Unilever RR deal, I made $60 in Register Rewards to spend! So, Walgreens technically PAID ME $48.60 to take 60 bottles of shampoo from their stores!!*

Cherry Dr. Pepper Mountain!

Target had a great deal going on this past week where they had their Dr. Pepper products on sale for 3/$10. They put out a Target printable for $1 off any 1 12 pack and on the Cherry Dr. Pepper 12 packs, there are $1 coupons on the inside of the boxes. When you combine the 2 coupons, you get 3 12 packs for $4 plus tax! That's less than the price of 1 12 pack in most stores these days! We didn't end up with as many as I had hoped because I ended up in the hospital, but we ended up with enough to tide us over until the next soda deal. Here's the math:

Total Before Coupons: $80.00
Total Money Spent: $27.18

I know this is late...but... SWEET DEAL!

I just have to share this deal with you. I just read on AFC and HCW that Sunsilk 12oz bottles of shampoo and conditioner are on clearance for $1.09 each. They are also part of the Unilever Register Reward Deal: buy 6, get $6 RR back. I blogged earlier about the new Kmart coupon booklet. There’s a $2/2 any Sunsilk hair product coupon in it. Here’s how this deal would play out.

$6.54 buy six Sunsilk shampoo/conditioner bottles on clearance (make sure to price check if not tagged at your store)-$6 when you use $2/2 coupon from Kmart coupon booklet=Pay $0.54 plus tax out of pocket and get a $6 RR back! Sweet!

Even if you don’t have the Kmart booklet and use no coupons, you would be paying 54 cents for six bottles of shampoo after register reward. That’s pretty good too. I know it’s sort of short notice as the Register reward deals ends tonight. But hopefully you will be able to find the shampoo on clearance to get in on the deal and you will be able to find the Kmart coupon booklet to make it a great moneymaker.

Happy Deal hunting!

Piggly Wiggly: Pre-Easter Sale Run

Piggly Wiggly is a store that I rarely frequent these days just because the prices are usually much higher than other stores and, in my opinion, the stores are just plain gross. My husband refuses to go into them because he says they stink. Well, last weekend they had a decent deal on Kellogg's cereals and Sister Schubert's rolls, so I ran in and grabbed a few the day before Easter.
